Mike Flanagan’s Clayface Movie Plot Details Revealed
Mike Flanagan is recognized as one of the best contemporaneous horror auteurs, with his takes on classic novels becoming wildly successful. The director has also shared his willingness to make his debut in the superhero world, and will do that with 2026’s Clayface.
The superhero movie is part of James Gunn’s upcoming DCU, which kicks off this summer with Superman. Clayface is set to be one of the two DCU films to debut in 2026, alongside Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Ahead of the film’s premiere next year, Clayface received several exciting details in The Hollywood Reporter’s newsletter, including the plot details.

‘Just Perfect’: Stephen King Shares Exciting Update for Mike Flanagan’s Delayed The Dark Tower Series
Although there aren’t any real development news about The Dark Tower, the author’s notes are exactly what fans need.
DC Studios is on the hunt for a director, as Mike Flanagan is only writing the script due to schedule conflicts with the Carrie TV series,The Exorcist reboot, and the upcoming The Dark Tower series. Two directors were rumored to be in talks to helm Clayface, including Truth or Dare‘s Jeff Wadlow and Speak no Evil’s James Watkins.
The newsletter highlights Wadlow is not in the “mix” to direct the upcoming superhero movie. “Never was and never will be. Watkins hasn’t met with DC’s head honchos yet, but is expected to.” The outlet also reveals Clayface won’t follow in Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s footsteps when it comes to its shooting location. Both films were also produced in England, but Clayface “isn’t eyed to shoot there,” although the plans might change if the movie hires a British director.
The film will have a modest production budget of $40 million, which is low for a superhero production. According to some sources, DC Studios is eyeing locations including Vancouver, Toronto, New Jersey or Atlanta.

‘Don’t Count Me Out’: Dave Bautista Told James Gunn He Wants to Join the DCU
Former MCU star Dave Bautista is ready to follow his Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn over to DC Studios.
The newsletter also reveals the film’s plot: “Clayface is a Hollywood horror story, using the most popular incarnation of the villain – a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.“
Because of the film’s storyline, it would make most sense for the movie to shoot in Los Angeles, the rightful place for a Hollywood story. No cast is attached to the project at the time of writing.
Clayface Will Be DCU’s Third Movie
Warner Bros. and DC Studios already mapped out the upcoming DCU’s beginning, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Aside from a new take on popular superheroes like Superman and Batman, who are not getting an origin story, other characters are expected to premiere in the DCU, including Supergirl, a new version of Green Lantern in the upcoming Lanterns, and Clayface.
James Gunn, who serves as the co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, but also a writer and director, revealed he didn’t have any plans for a Clayface movie. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie,” Gunn admitted in an interview with io9 in December. “Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie.’”
He continued, “But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.”
Clayface set its theatrical release for Sept. 11, 2026.
