BAFTA’s Fashion Verdict from LAURA CRAIK: Stylish stars turned up the heat but still gave us goosebumps

It might not boast the temperatures of their native LA, but Hollywood’s leading ladies made sure to turn up the heat in London at Saturday night’s BAFTA awards.

You’d never have guessed that the mercury was hovering at four degrees as guests made their way onto the red carpet. But goosebumps have no place at such a glamorous night, the UK’s equivalent of the Oscars – albeit a wildly chillier version.

Proving that white isn’t merely for summer, make-up free Pamela Anderson looked lovely in a white fishtail dress that fell gently off-shoulder.

Designed by the niche French label, Jacquemus, the 57-year-old star cemented her fashion credentials in one of the most strikingly simple looks of the night.

Also in white was Cynthia Erivo, 38, taking a well-earned break from months of method-dressing in green while promoting Wicked, by dint of a palate-cleansing Louis Vuitton gown with a structured lace breastplate.

By contrast, her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande, 31, stayed true to the look of her character Glinda in a black plunge-fronted gown with a tiered and ruffled salmon pink skirt, also by Louis Vuitton.

Other than Grande, most guests chose to eschew volume in favour of a slimmer silhouette.

Selena Gomez, 32, opted for a beaded silver column dress layered over a black off-shoulder bandage top by Schiaparelli, while Camila Cabello, 27, chose a similar look, in a beaded gold column dress with a matching satin corset worn underneath, by Sabina Bilenko.

Anora star Mikey Madison, 25, chose a strapless cream satin column dress with an elegant train, by Prada.

For some guests, however, it was simply too early in the year to shed the perennially winter colour that is black – a red carpet choice that is popular for a reason.

Marisa Abela, 28, proved just how classic black can look in a simple column dress by Dolce & Gabbana, while Zoe Saldana, 46, chose a black off-shoulder gown with feather detail, by Saint Laurent.

Also in the black corner: Kelly Rutherford, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Felicity Jones, who wore halterneck Armani.

By contrast, Lupita Nyong’o, 41, hedged her bets in a chic black and white gown by Chanel.

And then there were the guests who dressed in tribute to their host city: Demi Moore, 62, honoured London by wearing a multi-coloured sequin gown by one of the capital’s most famous labels, Alexander McQueen.

Designed by Sean McGirr, the gown’s panels recalled those of a church’s stained glass windows – a fitting metaphor, given so many are worshipping at the altar of Moore this awards season.

Hannah Dodd, 29, also opted for a British label in the form of a Simone Rocha black gown with a silver overlay, as did Gwendoline Christie, 46, in a black Giles Deacon gown.

Never mind who won a BAFTA: the real prize was who got to sit next to a radiator.
