UN reform and sustainable development top agenda in President Mbumba’s UN address

President Nangolo Mbumba once again emphasized the need to reform international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and its Security Council by prioritizing a multilateral approach.

“A new multilateralism—one that truly works—must rest on four key pillars of UN reform. First, the UN must empower nations and regions to adopt comprehensive pathways to provide economic opportunities and prosperity, underpinned by environmental sustainability. Second, the UN must strengthen global agreements and institutions to ensure the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Third, the UN must be equipped to finance these goals through an innovative global financial architecture. Fourth, we must harness the incredible advancements in science and technology for the common good, while being ever vigilant against the misuse of innovations such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and geoengineering,” the president explained.

These remarks are part of his opening statement made at the UN Plenary in New York, United States of America (USA). The gathering is part of the Summit of the Future, co-hosted by Namibia and Germany.

“Today, the world is at a crossroads. One path leads to environmental catastrophe, widening inequalities, global conflict and destruction, and the rise of dangerous technologies that threaten our security and civil liberties. The other path offers hope—hope for addressing climate change, global peace, the eradication of poverty and hunger, and the responsible harnessing of digital technologies for the benefit of all humanity. Therefore, the Summit of the Future is a timely and urgent call to action, urging us to choose the path of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development for all,” President Mbumba said.

The president explained that the Summit of the Future has been a collective effort over the past 18 months to build consensus, restore trust, and reinforce the principles of dialogue, cooperation, and shared responsibility. The main goal of the summit is to adopt the Pact of the Future, which aims to set out key global priorities for humanity.

President Mbumba highlighted these priorities as sustainable development and financing, international peace and security, science, technology, and innovation, the empowerment of youth and future generations, and global governance.

“We must leave this Summit with renewed commitments and concrete action plans to eradicate poverty, eliminate hunger, tackle climate change, and build a global economy that works for all. Future generations will judge us not by our words, but by our actions,” he added.
