World Bank estimates $53 billion needed for Gaza and West Bank Reconstruction
United Nations, European Union, and World Bank assessments indicate that the reconstruction needs for Gaza and the West Bank, after 15 months of conflict, will require more than $53 billion. This includes the military operations conducted by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.
According to a report from the Palestine Information Center, this initial rapid assessment of the damages and necessary needs suggests that $53.2 billion will be required for recovery and rebuilding over the next ten years. Of this total, $20 billion will be spent in the first three years alone.
One week ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a report prepared at the request of the General Assembly, stated that the amounts required for short-term, medium-term, and long-term recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip are estimated to be around $53.142 billion.
According to damage assessments conducted by the United Nations Satellite Center (UNOSAT) last month, by December 1 of the previous year, approximately 69% of buildings in the Gaza Strip had been damaged or destroyed, totaling 170,812 buildings.
Only 18 out of 36 hospitals (50%) remain partially operational, with a total of 1,800 beds.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that at least 496 schools have been damaged, nearly 88% of the 564 registered centers, with 396 schools directly hit.
The situation in Gaza and the West Bank remains dire, with the extensive damage requiring significant financial support for reconstruction and humanitarian aid. The international community must prioritize funding to ensure long-term recovery and the restoration of essential services.
The continued devastation also highlights the urgent need for a political solution to end the conflict and establish sustainable peace in the region. International cooperation and solidarity will be essential in rebuilding lives and infrastructure in Gaza and the West Bank.
