Nigeria calls for global action on sustainable development goals

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has urged world leaders to take concrete measures to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the 2024 Summit of the Future.

Ambassador Tuggar, in his speech at the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, emphasised the need for collective action to address challenges impeding development in Africa and the global south, noting only 16% of SDG targets are on track.

He stressed countries in the global north must support sustainable development in the global south.

Tuggar proposed action-orientated measures, including reform of international institutions and sustainable financing. “We must ensure today’s adoption of the Pact for the Future is backed by real willingness to fulfil outstanding commitments,” he said.

Nigeria seeks a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council, comprehensive debt relief, support for local production and export, access to climate loss and damage funds, and cryptocurrency regulation.

Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda, seeking solutions to global South challenges, especially in Africa. “We are optimistic targets can be met if commitments are backed by action,” he concluded.

The Summit of the Future aims to accelerate SDG implementation and address global challenges through sustainable development, climate action, and international cooperation.

Tuggar’s call to action resonated with leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly, emphasising the urgent need for collaborative efforts. The summit’s outcome is expected to shape global development strategies for years to come.
