Selena Gomez has spent much of the past several months promoting a number of film and TV projects. She was very much part of the awards cycle this year, thanks to both Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez. On more than one occasion, the actress and singer stated that while she will always love music, she may want to focus on acting for the time being. That may have disappointed some fans who love her many hit singles, but it turns out it was something of a misdirection, as Gomez has already released new music and plans on sharing more soon.
On Friday (February 21), Gomez released her first new single of the year titled “Call Me When You Break Up.” The tune is credited to the actress and musician, as well as her fiancée, super producer Benny Blanco, and featured artist Gracie Abrams.
Fans of all three artists flocked to “Call Me When You Break Up” to make it a quick hit. As of the time of writing, the single stands as the highest new entry on the United States iTunes Top Songs chart. The cut quickly bolted into the top 10 and currently lands at No. 4.
Two other brand new releases opened inside the top 10 on iTunes’s ranking of the bestselling tracks throughout the United States on its platform at the same time. “LV Bag” by Don Toliver, Speedy, BTS singer J-Hope, and Pharrell Williams comes in two spaces beneath Gomez, Blanco, and Abrams, at No. 6. Country/rock artist Warren Zeiders launches “Without You” at No. 9. That’s the latest focused track from his new album Relapse, which opens atop the iTunes albums ranking.
“Call Me When You Break Up” serves as the first single from Gomez and Blanco’s upcoming collaborative album, I Said I Love You First. The project is expected to drop on March 21, and it will be Gomez’s first collaborative project, as she’s previously always released music either on her own, or as the frontwoman of the band Selena Gomez & The Scene.
I Said I Love You First will mark Gomez’s first new album in half a decade. She last delivered a full-length in January 2020 with Rare, which went right to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, joining several other full-lengths from the singer.
In between her two complete projects, Gomez dipped her toes into Latin music after spending many years producing pop smashes. Revelación hit No. 22 on the Billboard 200, which was an impressive position for a Spanish-language effort. The title also earned Gomez another Grammy nomination, though she has yet to win any gold.
