Australia announced on Monday that it will provide an additional 10 million Australian dollars (about 6.8 million US dollars) in humanitarian aid to Gaza.
This funding is aimed at supporting life-saving assistance, particularly focused on women and girls, through United Nations agencies like UNICEF and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong highlighted that this financial support will address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza by providing essential services such as nutrition, hygiene products, and basic health supplies.
She stressed the need for rapid, safe, and unhindered access to humanitarian relief for civilians and emphasized the importance of protecting aid workers so they can continue their life-saving efforts. Wong also reaffirmed Australia’s call for a ceasefire, protection of civilians, and the release of hostages.
Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy, described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” stating that civilians should not bear the consequences of violent acts carried out by others. He called for an end to the ongoing suffering.
Since the onset of the war in Gaza, which escalated after Hamas and other groups launched attacks on October 7, Australia has committed a total of 82.5 million Australian dollars in humanitarian aid.
