A Beloved Comedy Franchise’s Latest Movie With 93% RT Score Lands Streaming Home

Netflix subscribers will soon be treated to the latest adventure featuring the beloved marmalade-loving bear Paddington. The third installment in the character’s live-action/CG animated film series, Paddington in Peru, is set to land on the streaming service later this month.

Beginning May 15, Paddington in Peru will be available to stream on Netflix. Released in November 2024 in the United Kingdom and in February 2025 in the United States, the third Paddington movie was another critical and commercial success for the beloved family-focused franchise. The threequel grossed over $191 million worldwide, bringing the franchise’s collective box office total to over $600 million. Paddington in Peru was also well-received by reviewers, earning a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, which some moviegoers may be surprised to learn is actually the worst RT score yet for the franchise.

Just in time for the director’s follow-up film.

In Paddington in Peru, Ben Wishaw returns as the voice of the marmalade sandwich-loving bear, who returns to Peru “to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru,” reads the official synopsis for the third installment.

Joining Wishaw in Paddington in Peru are returning cast members Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, and Imelda Staunton, reprising their respective roles as Henry Brown, Mrs. Bird, Samuel Gruber, Judy Brown, Jonathan Brown, and the voice of Aunt Lucy, while Emily Mortimer replaces Sally Hawkins in the role of Mary Brown. Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, and Carla Tous round out the ensemble cast as a trio of respective new characters: the Reverend Mother, Hunter Cabot, and Gina Gabot.

Paddington fans were also treated to a cameo from Hugh Grant at the end of the threequel, who reprised his role as Paddington 2 villain Phoenix Buchanan. “I thought it was a very Paddington reconciliatory thing to do to go. Meet his nemesis from the second film,” explained director Dougal Wilson on how the cameo came together. “Wouldn’t it be fun if Paddington was the one visiting with his bear tribe, and they were visiting Phoenix because Paddington’s forgiven Phoenix?”

More Paddington Is on the Way

Paddington in Peru will not be the last installment in the franchise, as StudioCanal announced in September 2024 that a fourth CG/live-action movie, as well as a new television series, was in development. The two new projects are on track to debut as part of the franchise’s 70th anniversary in 2028.

“We are also working on a new TV series and a new movie to come in 2027, ’28,” said StudioCanal’s Sissel Henno at the time. The franchise has also expanded beyond the screen, with Paddington Bear set to take over London’s West End in November 2025 with Paddington: The Musical. It will be the second stage adaptation of the book series, after Shirlie Roden’s 1983 musical Paddington Bear’s Magical Musical.

Paddington in Peru arrives on Netflix on May 15.
