A centre to popularise science among schoolchildren planned in Tiruchi

In an effort to encourage schoolchildren to learn science in an interactive manner, the School Education Department has taken steps to construct a modern science centre at Kattur in Tiruchi.

The project is to be implemented under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Ankuran Foundation of Pinnacle Infotech at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore. The facility will come up on the premises the Government Adi Dravidar Boys Higher Secondary School on a 35,000 sq. ft. land parcel at Pappakurichi in Kattur.

The Ankuran Science Centre will be a two-storey building with an advanced telescope for space exploration, a periodic table courtyard, a dark room, and laboratories dedicated to physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, mathematics, computer science, and robotics, all equipped with modern tools and resources.

It will offer working models to explain concepts on these topics, do-it-yourself (DIY) kits, a reading room, seminar rooms, virtual reality (VR) classrooms, a library providing access to the internet, e-journals, digital books, and innovation-centric resources, and outdoor study spaces to encourage hands-on and experiential learning.

The centre will cater to students of Classes 6 to 12 as well as research scholars. It is aimed at offering a conducive environment for students to ask questions, explore ideas, and learn from their experiences.

According to K. Marudhanayagam, Tiruverumbur Block Education Officer, the centre will benefit students by making science learning fun and interesting. “Hands-on science experiments will not only enhance their knowledge but also spark their interest in learning scientific concepts,” he said.

The Ankuran Foundation has been granted permission to use this land exclusively for the Science Centre for 30 years, with the possibility of extension upon mutual agreement.
