PM Narendra Modi visits Vantara in Gujarat’s Jamnagar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured Vantara, a large wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation center in Gujarat, to witness its comprehensive approach to wildlife care. The facility houses over 1.5 lakh rescued, endangered, and threatened animals, representing more than 2,000 species.
During his visit, the prime minister enjoyed engaging with the center’s resident animals. He had the opportunity to play with and feed Asiatic Lion cubs, a rare Clouded Leopard cub, and a White Lion cub born at the center after its mother’s rescue. He also learned about the center’s breeding program for Caracals, which plays a vital role in protecting this increasingly rare species.
The prime minister’s visit highlighted Vantara’s commitment to animal welfare, evident in observations like elephants using hydrotherapy pools for arthritis and foot problems. The tour included the world’s largest elephant hospital and culminated with the prime minister witnessing the release of rescued parrots.
Vantara, meaning “Star Of The Forest”, is an ambitious wildlife preservation project founded by Anant Ambani and supported by Reliance Industries and Reliance Foundation. Situated within the Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat, India, it spans 3,000 acres and serves as a sanctuary for abused, injured, and endangered animals.
Vantara has been conferred with the prestigious Prani Mitra National Award by the government under the Corporate category, India’s highest honour in animal welfare. This recognition celebrates the exceptional work of the Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT), a Vantara organisation dedicated to elephant rescue and care.
Vantara aims to be one of the leading contributors to conservation efforts globally and has also run several awareness campaigns in recent times.
Spirit Animal Filter
Last year, Vantara launched an online initiative, the Spirit Animal Filter, aiming to engage younger audiences and raise awareness about wildlife conservation. This innovative online tool was aimed at blending entertainment with education, inviting users to digitally embody various “spirit animals” while fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation.
Available on popular social media platforms, the Spirit Animal Filter offered a unique experience, identifying the user’s inner spirit animal amongst lions, elephants, snow leopards, and more to reveal their similar personality traits.
Through this engaging platform, Vantara planned to spark conversations about the importance of preserving our planet’s diverse fauna.
Using the Spirit Animal Filter, Vantara aimed to leverage the power of social media to inspire individuals to join the cause of wildlife preservation. Since its launch, the filter gained traction, resonating with users across the nation and amplifying the message of conservation.
Celebrities and influencers from the field of entertainment, sports and beyond such as Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Janhvi Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Arjun Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Rajkummar Rao, Ananya Pandey, Sania Mirza, Athiya Shetty, Manushi Chhillar, Mouni Roy, Irfan Pathan, Raj Shamani, Ranveer Allahbadia, Beyounick and more hopped on to the trend to find their spirit animal and spread awareness of Vantara’s foundation.
At the heart of this initiative lies Vantara’s commitment to wildlife welfare and conservation. With a sprawling 3,000-acre sanctuary, Vantara serves as a haven for rescued animals, providing them with the care and support they need to thrive. This sanctuary plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of abused, injured, and endangered animals, offering them a chance at a new life.
Pledge to plant 1 million trees a year
Vantara launched an inspiring new video campaign featuring top celebrities in honour of World Environment Day last year. The campaign, tagged with #ImAVantarian, aimed to raise awareness and foster collective action towards environmental conservation.
The video showcased influential personalities from various fields, including acclaimed actor Ajay Devgn and actress Bhumi Pednekar, rising stars Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma, digital sensation Kusha Kapila, and cricket icon KL Rahul. Each celebrity passionately expressed their commitment to the environment, urging viewers to join them in making a tangible difference. The campaign was designed to resonate with a diverse audience, leveraging the influence of these celebrities to emphasise the importance of environmental responsibility.
The video encouraged viewers to take a pledge for the environment, adopt sustainable practices, and spread the word using the campaign hashtag.
In celebration of World Environment Day, Vantara decided to plant 5,000 plants at its premises, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility.
Furthermore, as part of its long-term dedication to the environment, Vantara pledged to plant one million trees annually. The company invites everyone to participate and contribute to making a positive impact on our planet.
“This World Environment Day, Vantara pledges to continue our commitment to the environment. Every small deed counts, and together, we can create a significant impact. This day is a reminder of how important it is to take collective action towards preserving our planet for future generations,” said a Vantara spokesperson.
To further engage the community, Vantara launched an Instagram filter that included a badge indicating the user had taken the #ImAVantarian pledge. This filter allowed users to proudly display their commitment to the planet’s restoration and conservation by sharing stories and adopting sustainable practices.
Public art initiative
Vantara last year also unveiled a new public art initiative designed to raise awareness about the broader environmental consequences of modern life, from pollution to habitat destruction. From October 4 to 6, 2024, three wildlife-inspired sculptures were displayed across key locations in Mumbai—Carter Road, Shivaji Park, and Juhu Beach—each portraying the challenges animals face due to human activity.
These sculptures, made from wire mesh and locally sourced materials, were not just artistic expressions but a call for reflection. Each piece depicted wildlife interacting with human waste, a subtle yet poignant reminder of how our daily habits—from plastic use to urban expansion—impact ecosystems.
One of the installations depicted an Asian Black Bear with its head caught in a discarded plastic container, representing how animals unwittingly become victims of human waste. Another sculpture portrayed two Flamingos entangled in plastic, symbolising the disruption to bird habitats caused by pollution. At Juhu Beach, the focus shifted to marine life, with a simple yet evocative sculpture of turtles trapped in nets and surrounded by waste, a representation of the challenges sea creatures face.
As the sculptures invited Mumbai residents to pause and reflect on World Animal Day, Vantara encouraged individuals to reconsider their environmental footprint and make small changes that contribute to a sustainable future.
