A Minecraft Movie excitingly crafts the world-building empire for Minecraft fans – [your]NEWS

by Henry Pham

Hollywood embodies and relies consistently on movies adapted from video games, such as the Mortal Kombat films, Sonic the Hedgehog films, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Detective Pokemon. A Minecraft Movie focuses on the four misfits – consisting of Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn – who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, the four need to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter named Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative, which are the skills needed to head back into the real world.

All the main actors enjoy their roles so much because they do it well. They include Jason Momoa (Aquaman) as video-game-playing champion Garrett, Emma Myers (Netflix’s Wednesday) as Natalie, Sebastian Hansen (Just Mercy) as her brother Henry, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (2023’s The Color Purple) as real estate Dawn, and Jack Black (School of Rock, Jumanji sequels) carrying out his supporting role as the minecrafter named Steve. Despite their misadventures, each cast demonstrates their different, gifted talents and personalities, embodying their character development and role-playing inner study for the plot. While the cast brings loads of fun, heart, and comedy to audiences and Minecraft fans, Jack Black carried out the film as he is the heart and soul of this video-game-to-film adaptation, and he is having an absolute blast playing his role and filming this with his co-stars.

Adapted from the famous video game created by Mojang Studios, Jared Hess, known for writing and directing Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre (which also stars Jack Black), crafts his own director’s chair to helm this piece with Momoa serving as one of the producers. While Hess stays true to his comedy trademarks, the production set, colorful atmosphere, and set design are spontaneously well-designed. Hess and his company bring the video-game story to life as it is fun and humorously adventurous at the same time, which was given the good Jumanji treatment nod by the director and Jack Black, considering the latter has experiences with action-adventure films he has done. The references (if you’re a Minecraft player) to the Minecraft franchise are noticeable and impressive. The visual effects are ambiguous, but they need a little more work as it has some green screen effects due to bad lighting on the cast, messy CGI, and the number of explosions.

I did not play the Minecraft game, but this movie is just dumb fun and filled with game-plumping action. I laughed and chuckled throughout the story thanks to the fun, hilarious performances coming from Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the latter who is way more humorous. It is one of those films where Jack Black will be Jack Black, while Jason Momoa will be Jason Momoa. With 100 minutes of brick- building fantasy dreams, A Minecraft Movie excitingly crafts the world-building empire for Minecraft fans. This movie sets the stage for the movie industries to make films based on video games and toy franchises (including Barbie and the Transformers films), and I cannot wait to see many more in the Minecraft franchise in theaters in the future, depending on the box office success of this piece. It would be a great franchise starter pack for sure. Lastly, be sure to stick around during and after the end credits as this builds the future for a potential sequel that is about to go underway.
