Earlier this year, Anora director Sean Baker took the stage at the Independent Spirit Awards in the US and delivered a sobering speech on the realities of making independent films.
In accepting the Best Director award, Baker told the crowd that indie film was “struggling more than ever” and that “if you are a writer/director trying to break in right now, there’s a good chance you are making a film for free or making next to nothing on production or sale”.
