A24 picks up Elden Ring live-action film, led by Alex Garland of ’28 Days Later’

It’s official: Elden Ring is set to get its very own live-action adaptation.

And while video game adaptations by Hollywood have always borne mixed results, it seems at least that this movie is in good hands. A24, the independent studio best known for innovative and off-kilter works like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Midsommar and Hereditary, is producing the movie.

The film is also set to be written and directed by Alex Garland. Garland’s directing chops span films like Civil War, Annihilation and Ex Machina, but his writing resume is much longer, with 28 Days Later being one of his most notable screenplays. He’s also no stranger to video games, as elements of 28 Days Later were inspired by Resident Evil.

Additionally, A Song of Ice and Fire’s George R. R. Martin is listed as one of the film’s producers. Martin has been involved with the game before, having written Elden Ring’s backstory.

What exactly the movie is adapting hasn’t been made clear, and neither has the angle it’s taking (whether it’s leaning into horror, fantasy or action elements). However, given Elden Ring’s expansive lore and narrative, we can only hope that the film does the game’s world justice.
