Filmmaker and producer Akshay Singh, who has acted in, directed, and co-produced the web series Naam Gum Jayega, and is earning praise for his multifaceted talent, has always felt that cinema was his true calling. He is also the man behind the award-winning film Pinky Beauty Parlour. His journey began early, with a childhood dream in his hometown in Uttar Pradesh — a passion he carried with him through his schooling in Dehradun. Little did he know that this dream would take him far beyond his hometown, eventually leading him to make his mark internationally with his very first feature film.
He said, “I have been fortunate to explore different facets of storytelling—as an actor, writer, director, and producer. My journey began with acting in theatre and television, where I portrayed diverse roles across popular shows.”
He always had a creative spark; talking about it, he said, “Even as a teenager, I was drawn to storytelling. I would write skits and spoofs of movies, often roping in my younger cousins to act while I played the hero. Sometimes, we didn’t even have a video camera, so we would tell the story through still photos. I wrote my first original skit in Class 8 for a Children’s Day function in school, and that little spark gradually turned into a lifelong passion.”
Thanks to those days, Akshay has learned the art of improvisation and adaptation. It also marked a learning stage for what he refers to as his true calling. “As an actor, I often improvised my scenes and dialogues—something my directors appreciated—and a couple of times, I ended up rewriting entire scenes on set. Those experiences gave me the confidence to pursue writing and eventually direction,” he said.
“Though I never went to film school or assisted any director, I learned by observing keenly on sets—from behind the camera and beside the monitor. Those experiences taught me rhythm, storytelling, and instinct more than any film school possibly could,” he added.
And with all that learning from his early years, he made his debut with Pinky Beauty Parlour, which he wrote, directed, acted in, and produced under his banner, Akshikha Entertainment, co-founded with his wife, Bahnishikha Das. The film went on to travel to over 30 international film festivals and received critical acclaim. Akshay has been unstoppable since and continues to explore stories across formats.
“For me, filmmaking is not just a profession—it’s an instinctive form of self-expression that keeps evolving with every project, just as he himself feels having come a long way from those school skits to where he is today as a Filmmaker” he concluded.
