Adam Sandler’s Next Netflix Movie Gets an Exciting Update (& First Look at Co-Star George Clooney)
Netflix is doubling down on Adam Sandler movies in 2025. Roughly four months after Happy Gilmore 2 drops onto the streamer, fans of the comedic actor will be able to watch the comedy-drama Jay Kelly, in which Sandler stars alongside George Clooney.
Per Deadline, Netflix has announced the release dates for Jay Kelly. The coming-of-age comedy-drama by writer-director Noah Baumbach will have a limited run in theaters beginning Nov. 14, 2025, before being added to the streaming service a couple of weeks later on Dec. 5, 2025. Plot details remain largely under wraps for Jay Kelly, with the logline merely stating, “Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.” Netflix has unveiled a first-look still of Clooney as the title character, which can be viewed below.

Described as a “heartbreaking comedy,” Jay Kelly marks Baumbach’s fourth outing with Netflix, following 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), 2019’s Marriage Story, and 2022’s White Noise. He co-wrote the screenplay with Emily Mortimer, who is also set to appear in the movie. Additional cast for Jay Kelly includes Billy Crudup, Laura Dern, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, Lenny Henry, Josh Hamilton, and Greta Gerwig.
Adam Sandler Has Been With Netflix for Over a Decade
Sander and his production company, Happy Madison, have a long history with Netflix. After initially signing a four-movie deal with Netflix in 2014, the actor has worked almost exclusively with the streamer ever since. While most of the comedy movies Sandler stars in for Netflix are critically panned — with his first, The Ridiculous 6, being one of the few movies with a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes — they more often than not top the streamer’s viewership charts. However, the actor has also starred in more dramatic fare for the streamer, such as Baumbach’s Jay Kelly and The Meyerowitz Stories or the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems.

Jay Kelly will likely be well-received by critics given the talent involved, but it’s doubtful that the movie will be able to outstream Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix. The long-awaited sequel to Sandler’s 1996 sports comedy Happy Gilmore will hit the streamer on July 25. Joining Sandler, who reprises his title role, will be five returning cast members: Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, Christopher McDonald as the notorious Shooter McGavin, Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson, Allen Covert as Otto, and Ben Stiller as Hal L. Newcomers to the main cast include Bad Bunny as Happy’s caddie and Kym Whitley as Bessie, a member of Happy’s support group.
Kyle Newacheck directed Happy Gilmore 2, which was written by Sandler and original Happy Gilmore co-writer Tim Herlihy. “We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down,” said Sandler of the quality of the sequel during a The Tonight Show appearance. “People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.”
Jay Kelly hits select theaters on Nov. 14, ahead of its Netflix debut on Dec. 5.
