Addressing energy poverty and combatting climate change | News, Sports, Jobs

To the editor:

Jed Dukett’s letter essentially claiming climate change is a hoax ignores overwhelming evidence (“The real issue is energy poverty,” Feb. 3). Climate change is acknowledged by respected global organizations including the World Meteorological Organizations, the UN Environment Programme, U.S. National Academy of Sciences, World Bank and European Union — to name just a few.

Even internal documents from Exxon Mobil, Shell and BP have acknowledged fossil fuels’ role in global warming. While Mr. Dukett correctly identifies energy poverty as a concern, his claim that the “climate crowd” prevents impoverished communities from accessing resources is misguided. As part of that “climate crowd,” I serve on the board of Lets Share the Sun (LSTS), which provides free solar-plus-battery systems to disadvantaged Puerto Ricans. My wife and I assisted in the installation of a system at an elder care facility in remote Adjuntas, alongside Queensbury high school students who raised $30,000 for the project. LSTS will complete its third installation at a women’s domestic shelter this month. Puerto Ricans understand climate change impacts firsthand, having endured increasingly violent hurricanes that cut power for months. Renewable solar power offers the perfect solution for those depending on reliable electricity for medical needs, security, daily living, and economic opportunity.

We can simultaneously address energy security for vulnerable populations and combat climate change.
