‘Adolescence’ Producers To Remake Classic Post-Apocalyptic Movie ‘Threads’

If you thought that Netflix’s Adolescence was heartbreaking, wait until you see what its producers have in store for us next. Word has come out that the British production company Warp Films is looking to turn one of the greatest post-apocalyptic movies of all time, Threads, into a TV series, and if it’s anywhere near as bleak as the original, you’re in for quite a sobering experience.

Per Variety, Warp Films has picked up the option to turn Threads into a TV series, which is apropos when you consider the original film was a made-for-TV production released by the BBC in 1984. It’s a chilling look at all aspects of a nuclear war, including the medical, economic, social, and environmental consequences such a catastrophe brings with it. Taking place over a couple of decades, the film seems ripe for a series remake, especially in today’s political climate.

Nothing represents the anxieties of the Covid age, climate change, and imminent global war like a good old-fashioned cinematic apocalypse.

Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people,” said Mark Herbert, founder and chief executive officer at Warp Films. Emily Feller, Warp Films’ CCO and executive producer adds:

“This adaptation will explore prescient issues through rich, character-driven storytelling. The original film’s chilling account immerses viewers in the struggles of ordinary people facing unimaginable hardship.”

While it may not be as widely known as some other post-apocalyptic movies, those that have seen Threads say the movie has stayed with them over the years thanks to its haunting portrayal of nuclear fallout. The ending alone, where everything just smashes to black, is enough to send a chill down our spines, and it’s a stark reminder that in real life, not everything is wrapped up in a nice little bow after a couple of hours. No, Threads grabs you by the wrist and says, “Here, this is how things really are.” The results are absolutely fantastic, even if the film does seem slow at times to some viewers.

“This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences,” added Herbert in his statement about the Threads remake. “Reimagining this classic film as a TV drama gives us a unique opportunity to explore its modern relevance.” It will definitely do that, especially given the time allotted to a TV series rather than a feature film. It will allow the production company to spend more time on key issues that affect the characters, and give us the chance to see them mature as things progress.

Whether they decide to mix things up by adding some positivity remains to be seen, but if they want to stay true to the original, they’d do well to just tell it like it is and not sugarcoat things. Nuclear war is hell, and the characters in Threads are certainly put through the ringer. We’d expect nothing less in a TV series, but, of course, not everyone shares the same nihilistic view as the original BBC film did. We’ll have more news on the Threads remake as things progress, but in the meantime, if you want to check out the 1984 classic, it’s available to stream for free on Tubi.
