AECI honours a century of impact while ushering in a new era

In marking its 100th year, AECI has released a landmark centenary publication: a premium coffee table book that chronicles the Group’s journey from its original founding in South Africa as an explosives supplier, to its role today as a global leader in mining services and in the South African chemicals industry. The book is a considered, deeply human record of innovation, adversity, transformation and global impact.

Legacy

The richly detailed publication pays tribute to the company’s enduring legacy of innovation, resilience and industrial leadership and outlines its vision for a sustainable, inclusive future. Structured thematically, the book blends editorial rigour with emotive storytelling and captures major eras of AECI’s development from its foundations in the explosives industry to its diversification, global expansion and deepening investment in environmental and social responsibility. With rare archival imagery, first-hand employee accounts and insights into its role in shaping industrial South Africa, the book is a cultural artefact.

The launch is both a tribute and a transition, coinciding with a significant moment of leadership change at board level as AECI recognises the remarkable tenure of Dr Khotso Mokhele, who retires as Chairman of the Board, and welcomes Philisiwe Sibiya as incoming Chairman. Both leaders represent ethical stewardship, accountability and bold ambition that has long defined AECI’s leadership ethos.

Outgoing chairman Mokhele says: “This publications is a reflection on what it means to lead, to evolve responsibly, to confront uncomfortable histories and to build institutions that endure because they serve people, not just shareholders.”

As the Group moves into its next century under the stewardship of Sibiya, the book becomes a strategic indication of AECI’s continued relevance, with a legacy of science, purpose and resilience that will guide the next 100 years.

Sibiya steps into the role of Chairman of AECI at a defining moment in the company’s history, bringing with her a formidable track record in business transformation, financial stewardship and strategic leadership across complex, high-stakes markets.

As the Group continues its transition towards sustainable innovation and global competitiveness, her leadership will be critical in shaping a future that is financially sound, socially responsive and operationally agile.

Widely recognised among Africa’s most influential businesswomen, Sibiya is globally connected and deeply committed to impact: “AECI has never stood still. It has always found opportunity in complexity and forged ahead with purpose. As we enter our next century, we do so with a renewed commitment to sustainable growth, to creating value for all stakeholders and to being a truly future-facing African company with an accelerated globalisation strategy.”
