Ahead of Highlander Reboot, Henry Cavill’s Forgotten Fantasy Film Becomes VOD Hit
Fans anticipating Henry Cavill’s appearance in the upcoming Highlander remake should check out the British actor in another vintage fantasy film that’s now an online hit nearly two decades after its premiere. Cavill’s critically acclaimed fantasy adventure, Stardust, makes magic on the video-on-demand (VOD) market as the Highlander movie takes shape.
Per Collider, Cavill’s Stardust recently made waves on the iTunes top 10 global chart. The film is particularly popular in the African nation of Namibia, where it reached as high as 4th at the end of July.
Based on Neil Gaiman’s 1999 novel of the same name, Stardust was directed and co-written by former X-Men franchise helmer Matthew Vaughn, whom Cavill would later work with on Argylle. Cavill stood out among an impressive ensemble cast for Stardust that features Hollywood legend Robert De Niro, Oscar-nominated actor Michelle Pfeiffer, X-Men franchise star Ian McKellen, Daredevil: Born Again‘s Charlie Cox and Horizon: An American Saga actor Sienna Miller.
Stardust centers around Cox’s Tristan Thorn, a man from the fictional English town of Wall, which borders the magical fantasy kingdom of Stormhold. Tristan enters the magical world to collect a fallen star for his romantic interest, Victoria (Miller), hoping to win her over and obtain her hand in marriage. However, his seemingly simple task gets much more complicated when he discovers the star is actually a woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes) who is in grave danger, as the king’s sons yearn for her power to secure the throne, while an evil witch named Lamia (Pfeiffer) wants to use her to achieve eternal beauty and youth. Tristan must also return Yvaine safely before Victoria’s birthday. Cavill plays Humphrey, Victoria’s dashing yet arrogant boyfriend and Tristan’s rival, who becomes a minor antagonist in the film.
One of Cavill’s most underrated movies, Stardust earned positive reviews. The film has a 77% critical rating and 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, grossing $137 million worldwide against a budget ranging from $70 million to $88.5 million. It also earned multiple accolades, including a Hugo Award and an Empire Award.
Henry Cavill Returns to the Fantasy World in Highlander
Cavill is set to lead Lionsgate’s Highlander reboot, a new take on the eponymous 1986 film that became a cult classic despite mixed reviews and mediocre box-office numbers. Cavill will play Connor MacLeod, the Scottish 16th-century immortal played by Christopher Lambert in the original movie. The British star has promised a “deeper” remake that improves upon the original movie’s beats.
Directed by John Wick franchise helmer Chad Stahelski, the new Highlander features Cavill alongside Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe in an undisclosed role. Principal photography on the Highlander reboot is expected to begin in Scotland in late September.
The Highlander remake is expected to open in theaters in 2027 or 2028.
