AIFF confirms Churchill Brothers as I-League Champions; Earn promotion to ISL

Shillong, April 20: Churchill Brothers FC of Goa have officially been declared the 2024–25 I-League champions, bringing home their third title and their first in 12 years.

The Goan club finished the season on top of the table with 40 points. However, their title win was delayed due to a pending appeal involving a match between Namdhari FC and Inter Kashi. Earlier, the AIFF Disciplinary Committee had awarded Inter Kashi three points after ruling that Namdhari had fielded an ineligible player. Namdhari later appealed the decision.

On Saturday (April 19), the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Appeals Committee ruled in favour of Namdhari, setting aside the earlier decision and restoring the original result. This confirmed Churchill Brothers as the league winners.

“The order passed by the Disciplinary Committee… cannot be allowed to stand when Namdhari FC was not heard at the initial stage. The appeal stands allowed,” stated Justice (Retd.) Rajesh Tandon, chairperson of the Appeals Committee.

The AIFF confirmed the decision in a tweet, saying, “Churchill Brothers FC Goa, who have the highest number of points in the league, are now the champions.”

The ruling means Churchill Brothers stay at the top with 40 points, while Inter Kashi finish second with 39. The committee also directed the AIFF to conduct the medal distribution ceremony immediately.

This title win could open the door for Churchill Brothers to move up to the Indian Super League (ISL), based on sporting merit, if they meet all required criteria.
