Air travel volume in 2024 surpasses pre-pandemic levels by 3.8%
Global air passenger volume finally surpassed pre-pandemic figures and recorded a new high in calendar year 2024 even as India saw the fastest growth in passenger carrying capacity among the top six markets, according to global airlines’ body.
Passenger traffic grew 10.4% from 2023 and exceeded 2019 figures by 3.8% globally, according to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) monthly report. The calendar year 2023 traffic growth had reached only 94% of 2019 levels.
Passenger volume is recorded in Revenue Passenger Kilometers, which is calculated by multiplying the number of revenue passengers by the distance travelled.
Total aircraft capacity, which is calculated by multiplying the number of available seats by the distance flown, was up 8.7% in 2024. The average seat occupancy, or passenger load factor, also hit a record for the full year at 83.5%.
International full-year traffic in 2024 increased by 13.6%, while domestic full-year traffic rose 5.4% compared to the previous year.
China’s domestic traffic grew the fastest in 2024 at 12.3%, much faster than seat supply of 3.1%. In India, domestic traffic was the second fastest globally at 6% year-on-year in 2024. As airlines continued to add more aircraft, the seat supply in India was the fastest among the top six markets, growing at 6.8%.
