AJ Newberry injury update for Vanderbilt football running back in 2025

Vanderbilt football running back AJ Newberry is ahead of schedule in his injury recovery ahead of the 2025 season.

Newberry originally suffered the undisclosed injury at the end of the 2024 season, missing the final game against Tennessee as well as the Birmingham Bowl. He also sat out all of spring ball. At first, it was unclear whether Newberry would be back to full go by the start of the season, but Newberry has been participating in preseason practices and is progressing well, according to run game coordinator Ghaali Muhammad-Lankford.

“AJ has done an unbelievable job of rehabbing over the offseason,” Muhammad-Lankford said after an Aug. 3 practice. “He’s positioned himself to be able to do some really good things at fall camp, which puts him ahead of schedule. We’re really excited about his progress and we’re excited about having him back.”

In 2024, Newberry served as a change-of-pace back to starter Sedrick Alexander, recording 185 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 41 attempts in his 11 games. He also served as a pass-catcher out of the backfield at times, catching seven passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
