Alabama football breaks forgettable penalty streak in win over Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. — Alabama football broke a streak that had lasted coach Kalen DeBoer’s entire season-plus tenure in Saturday’s 24-21 win over Georgia. And DeBoer would rather this one stay broken.
The Crimson Tide drew fewer penalties (four) than its opponent (six) for the first time in DeBoer’s 17 games as coach. And it played no small part in the victory, according to Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.
“We knew it was going to be loud. That was a hostile environment. We worked on silent (cadence) all week, and it was probably a little louder than we anticipated,” Simpson said. “But I made sure communication was key. As long as we’re all doing the same thing, we have a chance. We only had what, one pre-snap penalty? One false start. That’s huge. That’s really, really good, by our O-line, our wideouts watching the ball, that helps us win games.”
Not surprisingly, Alabama had also given up more yardage in penalties than its opponents in every DeBoer game until Saturday as well. But with officials marching off 68 penalty yards on the Bulldogs and just 16 against the Crimson Tide, that streak was broken as well.
