Alexander Payne’s Next Film with Renate Reinsve Bought by Searchlight
Alexander Payne‘s next film has been acquired by Searchlight Pictures for worldwide release, and it’s the first film Payne will shoot in Europe and in another language.
Payne’s next feature is called “Somewhere Out There,” and it will star “The Worst Person in the World” actress Renate Reinsve. Payne is directing the film from a script by Erlend Loe and based on an idea by Åke Sandgren. Plot details are being kept under wraps.
Searchlight is reuniting with Payne after releasing two of his most beloved films, “The Descendants” and “Sideways,” the latter of which last year celebrated its 20th anniversary, and both of which won Payne the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
Payne is planning a shoot in Denmark in early 2026. Birgitte Skov is producing for Scanbox Production, which is releasing the film in the Nordics region.
“Some of my very finest filmmaking experiences have involved Searchlight. A return partnership was just a matter of time, and I’m elated,” Payne said in a statement.
“Alexander Payne is a master storyteller, and reuniting with him is a true joy. ‘Somewhere Out There’ marks an exciting new chapter, as Alexander makes yet another beautiful, honest, and deeply funny film. We’re thrilled to join an extraordinary team, including Thor Sigurjonsson and our new friends at Scanbox, and we’re proud to bring this story to audiences around the world,” Matthew Greenfield, President of Searchlight Pictures, said in a statement.
“This is a perfect example of how we, at Scanbox Entertainment and Vuelta, look at when producing local features,” Thor Sigurjonsson of Scanbox Entertainment added. “With Searchlight onboard the film, it is a great opportunity for a Danish Language film to find the widest audience possible. We are proud of our team and it is such an honor to work with Alexander Payne and Erlend Loe. Matthew and Chan Phung were so passionate about the project and we believe we have a great partnership for the film with Searchlight.”
“We are delighted that Searchlight shared our undivided enthusiasm for ‘Somewhere Out There,” Skov said. “We share our admiration for Alexander Payne and look forward to working together on this great project.”
Chan Phung, SVP, Acquisitions & Production, and Paul Hoffman, SVP, Business Affairs, brokered the deal on behalf of Searchlight Pictures with Christine D’Souza Gelb at 2AM. Thor Sigurjonsson of Scanbox Entertainment and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert of Playtime Group are co-repping the film.
Vuelta Group and Scanbox Entertainment are financing. The film is supported by the Danish Film Institute and Regional Fund Vestdanske Filmpulje (DVF), the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI), and the Danish Broadcasting Corp (DR).
Payne’s most recent film “The Holdovers” from 2023 was released by Focus Features and grossed $45.7 million worldwide and scored a Best Picture nomination and win for Best Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
