The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is expanding its footprint in Morocco with the opening of a local subsidiary of its logistics arm, Cainiao Smart Logistics Network, in Casablanca in May 2025. This strategic move aims to position Morocco as a key e-commerce logistics hub between China, Africa, and Europe.

Casablanca: the new logistics nerve center for Alibaba

The new entity, registered as a SASU (simplified joint-stock company with a sole shareholder), is located in the upscale Gauthier district of Casablanca. Operated by Cainiao B.V., Alibaba’s Dutch subsidiary, this structure will allow the group to control the entire logistics chain between China and Morocco — from sorting and warehousing to transportation, customs services, and digital data hosting.

A logistics base serving the BtoB market

This installation supports the launch of Alibaba.com’s BtoB platform in Morocco, officially announced on December 18, 2024, during an event organized in partnership with ASMEX (Moroccan Exporters Association) and AMDIE (Moroccan Investment and Export Development Agency). The goal is to connect Moroccan businesses to global trade, with plans to later expand into the BtoC segment.

To stay competitive on international markets, Alibaba relies heavily on efficient logistics infrastructure. That’s where Cainiao’s expertise becomes a strategic asset — ensuring speed, reliability, and operational fluidity.

Cainiao: a global leader in e-commerce logistics

Founded in 2013, Cainiao has become a major player in global logistics, on par with giants like Amazon Logistics. Its vast global network includes:

  • Over 1,100 warehouses worldwide

  • 380 sorting centers

  • 170 chartered flights weekly

  • 170,000 pick-up and drop-off stations

Its promise: deliver anywhere in the world in under 5 days.

Positive economic impact expected for Morocco

Cainiao’s launch in Morocco is part of a broader strategy to boost economic development. The project is expected to generate:

  • Qualified job creation

  • Transfer of technological know-how

  • Development of logistics infrastructure

  • Growth in the digital, transport, and international trade sectors

With this initiative, Alibaba clearly demonstrates its ambition: to make Morocco a central player in the global e-commerce supply chain and a strategic launchpad for its expansion across Africa.
