Amari Jefferson could play baseball and football at Tennessee
Amari Jefferson and Tennessee baseball have mutual interest in the football transfer from Alabama being a two-sport athlete with the Vols, a source with direct knowledge told Knox News on Tuesday.
The source requested anonymity because plans have not been finalized.
Jefferson joining Tony Vitello’s team would depend upon coordinating the logistics of juggling both sports. Jefferson, who committed to UT as a transfer Tuesday, was committed to Vols baseball as a two-sport high school standout at Baylor School in Chattanooga.
He committed to Vitello’s program in 2021 and Vols coach Josh Heupel offered him a football scholarship in July 2022. He flipped to Alabama football on Aug. 5, 2023.
Jefferson took a redshirt in 2024 after not playing at Alabama. He entered the portal following the Crimson Tide’s loss to Michigan 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
The 6-foot, 197-pounder was ranked as the No. 212 prospect and the No. 35 wide receiver in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. He was ranked the No. 5 recruit in the state of Tennessee.
Jefferson chose Alabama over Georgia and Tennessee out of high school.
Tennessee, which opens the season with a three-game series against Hofstra starting on Feb. 14, was ranked No. 5 in the Perfect Game preseason poll.
Tennessee won the program’s first national title in June, beating Texas A&M in a three-game series to win the College World Series finals in Omaha, Nebraska. The Vols also won the SEC regular-season title and the SEC Tournament title, sweeping the crowns for the second time in three seasons.
The Vols have the most wins in the country in the past five seasons with 226. They have the a national-leading .779 winning percentage in that five-year span. They have won at least 50 games in three of the past four seasons and have reached the CWS three times in those four seasons.
