Amazon’s Reboot Series of 26-Year-Old Film Gets Canceled After 1 Season

Amazon won’t be moving forward with a second season of Cruel Intentions, the new TV series that served as a reboot of the 1999 film of the same name. The news comes four months after the show’s debut on Prime Video in 2024.

Per Variety, Cruel Intentions has been canceled at Prime Video after one season. It’s an unfortunate end for the series, which had to overcome some major hurdles in development to finally get made. The Cruel Intentions reboot was first announced in 2021 for IMDb TV/Amazon Freevee in 2021, though it was not officially ordered to series on Prime Video until late 2023.

This director was previously offered to helm James Bond but “was troubled about the idea of doing it”.

Upon release, the reboot proved to be polarizing, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 24% with a much-higher audience score of 81%. The audience score was strong, but that alone may not have been enough to save the series. Exact viewership numbers are not known for the Cruel Intentions reboot, but the series did not take the world by storm. It never once ranked in the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts.

Multiple Previous Attempts Were Made to Reboot Cruel Intentions

It’s hard to say how much it would have made a difference, but original Cruel Intentions star Sarah Michelle Gellar did not ultimately appear in the new series following reports of her possible return. In 2016, a pilot for a sequel series was ordered at NBC with Gellar reprising her role as Kathryn Merteuil, but it was not ultimately picked up by the network. At one point after the original film, Fox plotted a Cruel Intentions prequel series that was canceled in pre-production; the three episodes filmed were later cobbled together into a direct-to-video film dubbed Cruel Intentions 2, released in 2001. Another direct-to-video sequel with a different cast, Cruel Intentions 3, was released in 2004.

The reboot was created by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman. It starred two step-siblings, played by Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess, who attend Manchester College in Washington, D.C., where they’ve climbed the social ladder. Looking to avoid losing their status after a hazing stunt goes wrong, the two devise a plan to seduce the Vice President’s daughter (Savannah Lee Smith). Sara Silva, John Harlan Kimm, Khobe Clarke, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas also starred.

“We’re really hoping that people fall in love with it for what it is and that they want to go on this journey with these characters in this world, wherever it’s going to take us,” Goodman previously told THR about the possibility of getting a second season. “So will there be shoutouts? Of course, we love all of that stuff. But we’re already eight hours into an hour-and-a-half movie.”
