Ambassador Liu Jin: Gambian youth hold key to China-Africa future

Speaking at the China-Gambia Youth Bantaba held Wednesday evening at the Chinese Embassy in Bijilo, Ambassador Jin expressed heartfelt admiration for the resilience and aspirations of Gambian youth. The event, attended by government officials, scholarship recipients, and youth leaders, served as a vibrant platform for intercultural dialogue and celebration of bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Jin highlighted the Embassy’s unwavering dedication to supporting Gambians particularly young people through educational and cultural exchange programmes in China. “Why are we holding today’s event?” he asked. “The very reason is just as President Xi Jinping has pointed out: young people are the hope of China-Africa relations,” he said.

He emphasised that sending Gambian youth to China not only broadens their horizons and unlocks their potential, but also strengthens the living bridge between the two nations. “Your future will be rewritten by yourselves, while you also write a chapter in China-Gambia friendship,” he said.

The ambassador noted that the political foundation of China-Gambia relations rests on the one-China principle, while the economic foundation is built on mutually beneficial cooperation. “The people-to-people foundation is built on your trips to China and our gatherings like today’s Bantaba,” he added.

He recalled that last September, the heads of state of both countries agreed to elevate China-Gambia relations to a strategic partnership. “It is batches of young people like you who have continuously consolidated and built the foundation of China-Gambia relations, endowing them with strength and resilience.”

Ambassador Jin revealed that this year, nearly 80 Gambian youth were recommended by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Gambian Youth Chamber of Commerce to participate in seminars in China. He described China as the most popular destination for youth empowerment among Gambians.

Looking ahead, he announced that next year will be designated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, with the Embassy committed to deepening ties through cultural and educational initiatives. “The Bantaba is a platform to reconnect, share stories, and imagine new ways to strengthen our bonds,” he said.

Professor Pierre Gomez, Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, praised the Bantaba as a “noble platform for intercultural dialogue, youth empowerment, and reflection.” He described the gathering as a celebration of vision, partnership, and the boundless potential of youth.

“The Bantaba is a communal space for unity, reflection, and decision-making,” Prof Gomez said, applauding the Embassy for its continued support.

Journalist Momodou Lamin Choi, a recipient of the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), also commended the Embassy’s efforts. He described China as a country with a genuine commitment to mutual development, people-to-people exchange, and multilateral cooperation.

Mr Choi is set to depart for China to pursue a Master’s degree in Communication at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), a globally recognised institution known for its academic excellence and international outlook.
