Amber Afzali talks about starring in the new Angel Studios film “Rule Breakers.”

The synopsis of this movie is: In a nation where educating girls is seen as rebellion, a visionary woman dares to teach young minds to dream. When their innovation draws global attention, their success sparks hope—and opposition.

As threats loom and sacrifices are made, their courage and unity ignite a movement that could forever transform the world.

How was your experience in “Rule Breakers”?

My experience in Rule Breakers was unforgettable. As my first film, it felt surreal and special. The cast and crew created such a supportive environment that even as a newcomer, I felt comfortable and confident.

We bonded so much, traveling together, sharing laughs, and exploring places like Marrakech and Budapest – it was more like an adventure with friends than work.

What made it even more meaningful was the story itself. Portraying a character connected to my cultural roots and telling a story of resilience, hope, and empowerment was deeply personal.

Working with inspiring people like Roya Mahboob added so much depth to the experience. I’m so grateful to be part of a project that’s not just a film, but a story that truly matters.

What did you like most about your character?

What I loved most about my character, Esin, was her journey of finding her voice. She starts off unsure of herself but grows in confidence and strength as the story progresses, which really resonated with me.

I also appreciated how layered she is—smart, determined, but also vulnerable and relatable. Exploring those complexities was so rewarding. Plus, portraying a young Afghan girl in a story of hope and achievement, rather than just struggle, felt incredibly meaningful.

Esin represents so many girls discovering their own power, and it was an honor to bring that to life.

How does it feel to be an actress in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology, and social media being so prevalent)

Being an actress in the digital age is a mix of exciting and challenging. Social media and streaming platforms can make it easier to connect, share stories, and get inspiration from all over the world.

Self-tapes have made auditions more accessible, and indie filmmakers now have more ways to share their work. However, the pressure to build a “brand” on social media can be overwhelming.

As actors, a brand can even feel counterintuitive because our desire with acting is to tell stories of all different kinds of people and genres.

That said, there are so many opportunities right now, and I’m hopeful the industry will keep evolving in a positive way.

What do your plans for the future include?

For the future, I just hope to keep being creative and doing what I love. I want to keep growing as an actress, taking on roles that challenge me, and telling stories that matter.

In terms of bigger projects, I’d love to take on roles that combine action and drama, especially where I can bring my martial arts background into play.

Law school is also something I’ve been thinking about, just to expand the ways I can make a difference. But overall, I’m just excited to keep doing what I love for as long as I still love it.

I’ll keep evolving as both an artist and a person, and I’m ready for whatever comes next!

What is your advice for young and aspiring actors?

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give, it’s that if you really want something, you’ll make it happen. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible.

People will doubt you, and they’ll try to limit how big you can dream, but your passion and persistence will prove them wrong. I would also say it’s important to be kind to yourself throughout all this. Patience is something I’m still learning, but it is key.

This industry can be tough, but it’s full of incredible opportunities to connect, create, and share stories that matter. If you’re doing what you love, all the hard work is bound to pay off.

What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)

I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot lately. I tend to be the type of person who moves the goalpost just as I’m about to reach it, so the idea of success has always felt a little elusive.

When success is measured by things like praise, admiration, or recognition, it can be really daunting.

I’ve realized recently that it’s not about what others think of you or the external stuff—it’s about feeling fulfilled by the work you do and being true to yourself.

You can be successful in the traditional sense—fame, fortune, accolades—but if you’re waking up every day unsure of who you are or dreading what you do, that doesn’t feel like success to me. I’m still figuring out exactly who I am and what my purpose is, but I’m proud of where I am now and the decisions I’ve made.

I love what I do, and I’m proud of the person I’m becoming. As long as I stay true to myself and feel fulfilled in my work, I think I’ll feel successful.

What would you like to tell our readers about “Rule Breakers”? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)

What I’d love for readers to take away from Rule Breakers is that it’s a story about resilience, hope, and the power of believing in yourself, even when the odds are stacked against you.

It’s not just about a robotics team; it’s about young girls who dared to dream in a place where they were told they couldn’t. I hope this film shows that courage comes in many forms, and even the smallest acts of defiance can spark real change.

But more than that, I want people to walk away feeling empowered and to understand just how important it is

to tell stories like this—stories from the Middle East and South Asia, featuring actors from those regions, that highlight the strength, intelligence, and humanity of their people, not just their struggles.

I hope Rule Breakers is part of a larger shift in the industry toward authentic and inclusive storytelling.

And lastly, if there are even a handful of girls who walk out of the theater feeling more inspired and emboldened to pursue a career in STEM, that would be amazing!
