- Anand Mahindra beats Ratan Tata’s company, Tata Motors grows only by… whereas Mahindra sales increased by…
As the competition intensifies, the battle for the second spot in India’s auto industry among Mahindra Automotive and Tata Motors will likely be fought on innovation, pricing, and evolving consumer preferences.
Tata Motors, India’s second-largest automaker, continues to hold its position ahead of Hyundai Motor India. However, despite strong sales in December 2024, Tata’s overall growth for the year has been modest at just 2%. In stark contrast, Mahindra Automotive has showcased remarkable progress, achieving an impressive 22% growth in the same period.
Tata Motors VS Mahindra
Tata Motors Sales Performance
In 2024, Tata Motors dispatched a total of 5,62,468 units, a slight increase from the 5,50,838 units sold in 2023. This marks a 2.11% year-on-year growth, a marginal improvement.
Focusing on December sales, Tata Motors sold 44,289 units last month compared to 43,675 units in December 2023, registering just a 1% growth. While Tata continues to lead Mahindra in total sales, its growth trajectory has been relatively flat.
Mahindra Automotive Sales Performance
Mahindra Automotive, riding high on the popularity of its SUV lineup, recorded robust growth in 2024. The company sold a total of 5,28,460 units, a significant jump from 4,33,172 units in 2023, reflecting a 22% growth.
For December 2024, Mahindra sold 41,424 units, compared to 35,171 units in December 2023, achieving an 18% growth. This strong performance, especially in the SUV segment, underscores Mahindra’s increasing dominance in the Indian automotive market.
Mahindra’s Edge: SUV Revolution
Mahindra has captured the market with a string of successful SUV launches, including the Thar three-door, XUV700, Scorpio-N, and Thar Roxx. With an aggressive product strategy and consumer appeal, Mahindra is closing the gap with Tata Motors.
Future Plans: Electric SUVs Take the Spotlight
Mahindra’s upcoming electric SUVs, the BE 6 and XEV 9E, are set to revolutionize the market. Showcased recently with announced base prices, these vehicles are already generating significant buzz.
Key features of the BE 6 and XEV 9E include range up to 500 km on a single charge. It has battery packs with two options – 59 kWh and 79 kWh. It also has power top variants delivering 282 bhp and 380 Nm of torque, with power sent to the rear wheels for an exhilarating driving experience. It has futuristic exteriors and tech-loaded interiors aimed at attracting both EV enthusiasts and ICE vehicle buyers.
Can Mahindra Dethrone Tata Motors?
At its current growth rate, Mahindra poses a serious challenge to Tata Motors’ position as the second-largest automaker in India. With an expanding lineup of popular SUVs and innovative EV offerings, Mahindra is well-positioned to capture more market share in the coming years.
