With the introduction of its unique birdwatching tourism initiative, the Andaman and Nicobar islands are soon set to become a hub for eco-tourism. The islands have for a long time drawn bird enthusiasts and now the local government is turning to birdwatching as a niche tourism product to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Tourism Secretary Jyoti Kumari, while speaking to media, said, “Andaman and Nicobar Islands are home to many endemic birds. The initiative has been taken to create awareness on the islands’ rich avifauna diversity, potential of different segments of tourism, and to encourage responsible travel practices.”
For the unversed, birdwatching tourism, which is also known as avitourism, is a form of nature-based travel where groups visit specific locations to observe and study birds in their natural habitats. This segment of ecotourism attracts both amateur birdwatchers and professional ornithologists. This mode of tourism also promotes sustainable travel practices as it involves visiting protected areas like national parks, wetlands, forests and biodiversity hotspots. Countries like India, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Ecuador happen to be some of the most popular birding destinations.
