Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday invited Australia’s Griffith University to set up a sports centre of excellence in India. This is the same university that is credited for producing 10 gold medallists in the last Olympics.
“Today I met senior representatives and professors at the Griffith University, Gold Coast. I was truly impressed to know that the students of this university alone won 10 gold medals in the last Olympics. I discussed opportunities to develop partnerships in public policy, sustainability & innovation. I invited Griffith to set up a sports center of excellence in India. Such partnerships will greatly help our youth develop a sporting culture,” he said in a post on ‘X’ (earlier known as Twitter).
He also met with the global architecture firm Populous in Brisbane to explore world‑class stadium and urban‑event designs for Andhra Pradesh. “Sports venues are no longer just for games. They’re becoming cultural magnets and year‑round event hubs that power local economies and tourism,” his tweet stated.

We discussed integrated master‑planning for multi‑use districts including stadia, arenas, convention and public spaces. The idea is to attract events, create jobs, and catalyze vibrant neighborhoods across AP. This is about building places that unite communities while fueling growth,” he added in his social media post.
The TDP general secretary noted that sports instil discipline, hard work, competitive spirit and leadership. “I truly believe that India should build a sporting culture on par with the other great countries of the world,” he added. He also discussed opportunities to develop partnerships in public policy, sustainability and innovation with university officials.
Lokesh is currently on a seven-day tour of Australia to explore investments, partnerships and other opportunities for the state.
Griffith University is a public research university in South East Queensland on the east coast of Australia. The university was founded in 1971, but was officially opened in 1975.
The Australian university has five campuses, at Gold Coast, Nathan, Logan, South Bank, and Mount Gravatt. On 6 September 2024, Griffith University announced that they would be purchasing the historic Treasury Building in Brisbane, and converting it into the university’s sixth teaching campus, which will open in 2027.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs across a range of disciplines, including business, law, science, health, education, engineering, and the arts.
