Anime’s Best Vampire Movie Bites Into Exclusive New Streaming Home
When it comes to vampires and anime, one franchise has been at the top of the list for decades. Now, the classic Vampire Hunter D anime movie is heading to a terrifying new streaming home.
Released 40 years ago, Vampire Hunter D is one of the most iconic anime movies of all time. Combining science fiction and post-apocalyptic fiction with horror and vampires, the film is just one of many adaptations of the legendary light novels by author Hideyuki Kikuchi. Frequently praised in the same sentence as other anime movies of that era, it’s one of many new additions coming to Shudder in the coming month.

Vampire Hunter D Sinks Its Teeth Into Shudder Next Month
Vampire Hunter D was originally released in 1985, with the story following the eponymous D — a half-human/half-vampire tasked with protecting a young woman from a vicious horde of similar bloodsuckers. Roughly adapting the first volume of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s light novels, the movie was directed by Toyoo Ashida, with Yoshitaka Amano (the illustrator for the novels) and Ashida also creating the designs and visual direction for the movie. Only the first of many adaptations of the source material, 1985’s Vampire Hunter D will be added to the lineup of the horror streaming service Shudder. The anime film will be added on May 30, with the preceding weeks seeing other programming added, including Shudder’s original movie The Ugly Stepsister.
Vampire Hunter D made a huge splash when it was brought to the West, with the movie helping to make anime (especially more mature offerings) gain a foothold beyond Japan. Since then, it’s largely been seen in the same light as movies such as the original Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Ninja Scroll. The original movie was followed 15 years later by another anime film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, which was also positively received. Shudder will host the remastered version of Vampire Hunter D, with this premiere edition only being available to stream on the horror home.
