Anthony Ujah: Ex-Super Eagles star retires from football

Former Super Eagles striker, Anthony Ujah, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.

Ujah confirmed the decision on Friday through a post on his official Instagram page, describing it as the “toughest decision” of his career.

The Nigerian forward, who enjoyed most of his playing career in Germany, has been without a club since parting ways with Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv in July 2025. His one-year spell at the club was marred by injuries, which kept him out of action for 40 matches. He managed just five appearances, scoring twice, before drawing the curtain on his career.

“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football,” Ujah wrote. He expressed gratitude to all the clubs, coaches, and teammates he worked with, adding that representing Nigeria was one of his proudest achievements.

He further reflected on his career highlights, noting that football had been his “passion, identity and home.”

Ujah remains a cult hero at FC Köln, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014. He also earned fame for his lively celebration with the club’s goat mascot.

In a career spanning over 15 years, Ujah scored 113 goals and lifted the German 2. Bundesliga title with Köln. On the international stage, he earned seven caps for the Super Eagles but did not register a goal.

The striker said he would miss the atmosphere of the game but looked forward to beginning a new chapter away from the pitch.
