Anubhav Sinha on Bollywood audiences: Why we want every spice in one film

When you sit at a dinner table with friends or family, the conversation often begins with one simple question: ‘What should we eat today?’ Some vote for spicy Mughlai, others prefer something light, and a few might want pasta. Once the choice is made, nobody expects to find every cuisine on the plate.

Yet, in the world of cinema, audiences often want just that with every flavor in a single film.

This curious thought was shared by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, known for powerful films like ‘Mulk’, ‘Thappad’ and ‘Bheed’.

On Monday, the director posted a video on Instagram where he spoke directly to the camera and reflected on what people expect from Hindi films.

In his video, Anubhav Sinha compared movies to food and literature. “When you decide to eat Punjabi food, you don’t expect Italian on the plate,” he explained. “If you pick Dinkar’s poems to read, you don’t expect Shakespeare to appear in the pages.”

He then asked why audiences don’t think this way about films. According to him, many expect a Hindi film to have everything at once: drama, songs, action, comedy, and even social messages.

“It’s almost like a gravy where every spice must be mixed in,” Sinha said.

Sinha believes that films, like meals, depend on what you are in the mood for. Sometimes, people choose a light comedy just to laugh. At other times, they want the thrill of watching their favorite star on the big screen, whether it makes sense in the story or not.

“When he comes in slow motion, people cheer because they love their star,” Sinha pointed out.

But cinema is not always about fun and glamour. There are films that raise tough questions about society. They might be uncomfortable, like a bitter medicine or bland food, but they leave a strong impact.

The filmmaker questioned whether viewers are ready to accept such films. “If you go to watch a serious film, are you prepared for it to have no song, no humor, and no masala?” he asked. “Are you okay if it holds up a mirror to your life and makes you uncomfortable?”

According to him, many people in Bollywood believe every film must contain a mix of entertainment with music, comedy, action, emotions, otherwise it will not work. Sinha challenged this thinking, saying that cinema should also have space for films that may not entertain but instead spark discussions and criticism.

He openly admitted he doesn’t have the final answer. “Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am right. But I want to know what you think,” Sinha told his followers.
