Aoife Scott: ‘Writing this song changed something in me. It made me realise I could create music, I had stories to tell’
The singer-songwriter talks about what inspired her first ever song, ‘Down by the Shelleybanks’
Aoife Scott was inspired by the childhood coastal trips she took with her father
Meeting acclaimed singer-songwriter Aoife Scott near her home in Kildare, I’m struck by how normal she is. When I say I can’t place who she looks like, she says: “People don’t say I look like anyone. Maybe a mix between my mam and my Aunty Mary and probably more like my Granny Black. But I’m probably more like the Scott side, my dad’s.”
Her mam is, of course, Frances Black and her auntie is Mary Black. Despite being part of Irish traditional music royalty, Aoife Scott has no airs and graces. That is especially evident when she talks about Down by the Shelleybanks.
