APL Logistics opens eco-friendly logistics hub at KBN Marunda Industrial Estate – Companies

upply chain specialist APL Logistics recently opened its first distribution center, dubbed the Marunda Flow Center, at the KBN Marunda Industrial Estate in North Jakarta.

Inaugurated on Tuesday, the facility is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified flow center in Jakarta, the company said in a press release.

“The Marunda facility is strategically positioned to support anticipated growth and increased trade activity in Indonesia,” APL Logistics president Thad Bedard said on Tuesday, as quoted in the press release.

Bedard said that the logistics solution facility had a strategic location near major transportation hubs, such as Tanjung Priok Port, Kampung Bandan train station and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

He emphasized that the location was considered very ideal to support Indonesia’s rapidly growing international trade, increasing connectivity, flexibility and scalability of the supply chain.

The 32,000 square meter Marunda Flow Center included scanning systems installed on inbound and outbound gantries, ensuring operational efficiency and data accuracy, he added.

Bedard added that APL Logistics recognized the importance of the China +1 trade strategy to diversify the supply chain and reduce risks associated with over-dependence on one country.

Bedard said that this strategy involved shifting some production and procurement activities from China to other countries in Asia, including Indonesia.

Meanwhile, APL country operations director Indonesia Dileepa Dissanayake said that a feasibility study was currently being conducted to open a barge transportation service from Marunda directly to Tanjung Priok Port.

“We are evaluating the feasibility of building a barge connection between our facilities in Marunda and Tanjung Priok Port,” he said, as quoted by the press release.

“This will allow container transportation via waterways, not land, thereby reducing traffic congestion and shipping times. This initiative is in line with the sustainability principles that underlie the development of this facility.”

PT Kawasan Berikat Nusantara (KBN) president director Agus Hendardi said the launch of APL Logistics’ Marunda Flow Center would expand APL Logistics’ focus on increasing exports from Indonesia.

“As a service provider at the APL Logistics Marunda Flow Center, we are proud to reaffirm our commitment to supporting the growth and development of APL Logistics’ business in Indonesia,” Agus said, as quoted by the press release.

“We are confident that this collaboration will make a real contribution to the progress of the national logistics sector.”

The Marunda Flow Center was built as an environmentally friendly facility, using local materials and equipped with solar panels to meet operational electricity needs.
