Apple’s India sales hit record $9 billion after retail expansion, ETManufacturing

High import taxes continue to make iPhones expensive in India, with the entry-level iPhone 16 priced at ₹79,900 ($906), compared with $799 in the US.Apple’s annual sales in India reached nearly $9 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the matter. The company’s revenue rose about 13 per cent in the 12 months through March from $8 billion a year earlier.

The majority of sales came from iPhones, while demand for MacBook computers also increased. Apple has recently expanded its retail footprint in India, opening new stores in Bengaluru and Pune this week. Further outlets are planned for Noida and Mumbai.

The company restructured its international operations in 2023, designating India as a separate sales region due to its market potential. iPhones currently account for about 7 per cent of the local smartphone market, according to Counterpoint Research.

Manufacturing and pricing

In order to diversify its supply chain, the Cupertino-based firm has also made an India pivot for manufacturing, with one in every five iPhones now being produced in India, and the company is expanding production at five factories. Apple aims to use India as a major source of devices for the US market.
