FARGO — North Dakota State took two from South Dakota State in a Summit League doubleheader on Friday at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison won the first game 5-2 and NDSU’s Colten Becker hit a walk-off RBI single in a 3-2 victory in game two.
In the second game, SDSU led 2-1 through six innings, but Becker singled in a run in the seventh inning to tie it. In the bottom of the ninth, Jake Schaffner singled with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error. Schaffner stole third with two outs and Becker followed with his walk-off single to right field.
Becker was 2-for-5 with the two RBI and Schaffner was 2-for-5 and scored all three Bison runs. Dante Smith was 2-for-4.
NDSU’s Logan Knight started and went five innings, allowing a run on four hits, walking three and striking out six. Reliever Landon Koenig allowed a run on three hits and struck out four in three innings, and Skyler Riedinger pitched the ninth and got the win.
In the first game, NDSU erased a one-run deficit with three runs in the fourth inning, then added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
Becker was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, Davis Hamilton and Sam Canton both had hits and RBI, and Noah Gordon drove in a run.
Nolan Johnson started for the Bison and got his second win of the season allowing a run on seven hits in 6-2/3 innings. Reese Ligtenberg got an out to end the seventh and Danny Lachenmayer went the final two innings to pick up his third save of the season.
The Bison are 6-2 in the league and 8-16 overall. A third game against SDSU was postponed and will be played at SDSU as part of an April 25-27 series in Brookings, S.D.
Concordia drops pair at St. Mary’s
WINONA, Minn. — St. Mary’s defeated Concordia twice in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday.
St. Mary’s blanked the Cobbers 5-0 in the opener behind Addison Hochevar’s six-hitter. In second, nine-inning game, the Cardinals rode a big third inning to a 10-4 victory.
In the first game, Hochevar went all seven, walking two and striking out six. Brayden Wolfgram had the Cobbers’ only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
In the second game, the Cardinals broke open a 1-1 game with nine runs in the third inning.
Concordia’s Justin Kloster was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ben Shumansky was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The Cobbers are 0-2 in the MIAC and 8-8 overall. They play a doubleheader at Bethel at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, April 1.
Winona State downs Dragons twice
WINONA, Minn. — Winona State allowed just two runs in two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games against Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday.
The Warriors won the first game 10-2 in five innings, then defeated the Dragons 11-0 in six innings in the second game.
In the first game, WSU starter Izzy Howe improved to 13-3, going all five innings and allowing only one hit — MSUM’s Avery Steffen hit a two-run home run in the second at-bat of the game.
In the second game, Warriors starter Jayda Berg won her 12th game of the season, allowing five hits and striking out two in six innings.
The game was scoreless through three innings but WSU scored five runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and the Warriors wrapped up the game with four in the sixth.
No Dragon had more than one hit.
MSUM is 2-6 in the NSIC and 10-25 overall. The Dragons play at Concordia-St. Paul at 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, March 29, in St. Paul.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Youngstown roughed up the Fargo Force on Friday before 1,674 at the Covelli Centre.
Youngstown’s Michael Mesic scored two goals and Brecken Smith and Ryan Rucinski both had a goal and an assist. Phantoms goalie Melvin Strahl made 18 saves.
Kuzma Voronin scored the Force’s goal and Sam Laurila and Mason West had assists.
The Force and Phantoms play again at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, March 29.
Bismarck Legacy 14, Fargo North 3
BISMARCK — Bismarck Legacy put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs to pad its already three-run lead in a non-conference game on Friday.
North’s Andrew Perrault tripled and drove in a run, Sam Chase had a hit and an RBI, and Ben Sheets and Andrew Hanson had the Spartans’ other hits.
The Spartans play next against Devils Lake in a doubleheader on Friday, April 4.
