Arnside group celebrates 10 years of making reusable hygiene kits

Stitch in Time, based in Arnside, have creating the hygiene kits in partnership with Days for Girls UK since 2015, aiming to break the poverty cycle for women and girls across the world.

The reusable kits made by the Arnside team are sent to women of all ages in developing countries, enabling them to stay in school or work without having to hide away during their period.

Stitch in Time organiser, Lin Hartley said: “These sustainable, reusable menstrual kits for women and girls enables them to have more time at school or work, and allows them more dignity.

“The poverty cycle can be broken when girls stay in school.”

The group is one of just 20 in the UK working with Days for Girls, meeting on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Arnside Educational Institute, with one meeting per month in December and January.

Lin said: “We also knit and crochet blankets, hats and jerseys of all sizes to be distributed overseas in areas of need, and also within the UK for refugees and others in need. Members come along and stay all day or some of the day. We are just pleased to have you with us for as long as you can be there.”
