Arshad Nadeem wins gold medal at Asian Athletics Championship

Pakistan’s star javelin thrower and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem clinched the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea, with an impressive throw of 86.40 meters in the men’s javelin final.

Nadeem came close to breaking the championship record of 86.72 meters but comfortably secured first place. India’s Sachin Yadav took silver with a throw of 85.16 meters, while Japan’s Yuta Sakiyama claimed bronze at 83.75 meters. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who initially led the event, finished fourth with 83.27 meters. Pakistan’s second competitor, Yasir Sultan, ended in eighth place with a 75.39-meter throw.

In his first international competition since the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nadeem thrilled the crowd with a remarkable performance. He started modestly with 75.64m and 76.80m throws before launching an 85.57m effort on his third attempt to take the lead. He followed with throws of 83.99m and 83.44m, finally sealing his victory with the day’s best throw of 86.40m. As he competed, the stadium echoed with chants of “Dil Dil Pakistan.”

Nadeem rose to global prominence at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a historic javelin throw exceeding 90 meters—the sixth-longest in the sport’s history. The feat earned him the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and a hero’s welcome upon his return to Pakistan. Both federal and provincial governments, along with private organizations, announced cash rewards for his achievement.

However, in a recent interview, the Olympic gold medallist revealed that while some government awards have been delivered, many of the promised rewards from private entities remain unfulfilled.
