Art and ecology intersect at Taragon Next
Sagarmatha Next is organising an exhibition at Taragon Next titled ‘At the Tipping Point: Art and Ecology from the Rooftop of the World’.
The exhibit, inaugurated on Thursday, June 5, is curated by Arshiya Lokhandwala, an art historian and founder of Lakeeren Art Gallery in Mumbai, India.
It features 12 artists from many parts of the world: Amit Machamasi, Chris Jordan, Himali Singh Soin, Joana Moll, Maksud Ali Mondal, Monika Ursina, Jager, Robertina Sebjanic, Salil Subedi, Samyukta Bhandari, Saurganga Darshandhari, Ursula Biemann and Utsa Hazarika.
It is an ecological exhibition that underscores Nepal’s position as a ‘ground zero’ for climate change.
This exhibit’s emphasis borrows heavily from Indian literary critic Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s concept of ‘planetarity’ as a critical framework that shifts the focus from ‘planet,’ ‘earth,’ and ‘globalisation.’ It suggests that these terms often refer to a unified natural space rather than a politically differentiated understanding of our connection to the Earth.
“The extinction of species has upset the delicate balance of oceans, forests, and land, pushing ecosystems to the brink. Through exhibited artworks, it urges collective reflection on the shared consequences of human actions and the urgent need for sustainable stewardship to safeguard our planet,” read the gallery’s statement.
