Asia-Pacific Ignites 2025 Travel Fever

Asia-Pacific claims eight of the world’s 15 fastest-growing summer destinations, with Tokyo and Osaka leading the charge and Vietnam’s Nha Trang bursting onto the global scene, according to the new Mastercard Economics Institute report.

Tokyo is officially the hottest ticket of the 2025 summer season, Mastercard’s «Travel Trends 2025: Purpose-Driven Journeys» (MEI) shows that Japan’s capital moved up from No. 2 last year to seize the world’s top spot for June-to-September travel demand, while neighboring Osaka landed at No. 2. Together, the pair underline a second consecutive year in which Asia-Pacific dominates the trending-destinations league table, filling eight of the top 15 places.

Nha Trang in Vietnam made the list for the first time, propelled by white-sand beaches, a buzzing nightlife, and an enviable coastline that photographers love. The report attributes the beach city’s surge to travelers’ growing appetite for authentic coastal escapes and social-media-ready scenery.

Japan’s Magnetic Pull

A weak yen has super-charged Japan’s appeal. MEI finds that every 1 percent depreciation of the yen against the Chinese yuan translated into a 1.5 percent jump in visitors from the Chinese Mainland, while Singaporeans poured in after the Singapore dollar strengthened 40 percent versus the yen in 2024—a currency swing that offset pricier airfares and hotels.

China and India continue to shape regional flows. China retained its crown as the world’s largest outbound market, favoring visa-friendly neighbors such as Japan, Malaysia and Singapore, whereas Indian travelers, now at a record high, fanned out to Abu Dhabi, Hanoi, and Bali on the back of new direct flights and a booming middle class.

Vietnam’s Rising Star

Beyond Japan, Vietnam’s Nha Trang epitomizes the shift to «experiences over itineraries.» Travelers are prioritizing dining, wellness, and nature motifs that also propel Gianyar in Bali (famed for its Babi Guling spit-roasted pork) and Queenstown, New Zealand, where restaurants welcomed diners from 44 nations last year.

Thailand, too, scores high on MEI’s Wellness Trend Index thanks to meditation retreats and eco-lodge escapes, while a rising index score for New Zealand hints that more travelers now equate the country with relaxation and self-care. Purpose-driven travel, the report argues, is no fleeting fad; it reflects a deeper desire to nourish both body and spirit.

Exchange Rates Tip the Scales

The study confirms that Asia-Pacific tourists are especially sensitive to currency swings. When the U.S. dollar slips 1 percent against the Indian rupee, Singapore dollar, South Korean won, or New Taiwan dollar, arrivals from those economies to the United States climb roughly 0.6–0.8 percent, mirroring the pattern seen with Japan’s yen.
