Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music launches first-ever examinations in Tura
Tura, Aug 31: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Guitar Workshop and Musical Concert in Tura, calling it a “milestone” in Meghalaya’s musical journey and reaffirming his government’s commitment to nurture young talent.
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music and the world’s leading provider of graded music exams and assessments. Over 600,000 candidates take ABRSM music exams each year in more than 90 countries around the world.
The two-day programme, organized in collaboration with the Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme and the Rhythm School of Music, marked the first time ABRSM examinations are being held in Tura, with a UK examiner set to assess local students.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister recalled his own musical beginnings in Tura in the 1990s and reflected on the transformative power of music. “I may call myself a failed musician, but I strongly believe music can change lives, societies, and communities,” he said. Highlighting initiatives like the Grassroots Music Program, he noted that his government spent over ₹35 crore last year to support nearly 7,500 artists across the state.
He further stressed the need for structured academic training in music, from theory and notation to proper equipment and recording facilities, to elevate Meghalaya’s artistic ecosystem.
Guest of Honour Sonia Khan, ABRSM’s India representative, hailed the event as historic for Tura and dedicated the concert to the town’s people for their enduring passion for music.
The workshop featured acclaimed American guitarist Matt Bacon, drawing nearly 150 participants from across Garo Hills, and concluded with a concert blending performances by Bacon, local musicians, and students.
