‘Astoundingly real’ war film on Netflix is ‘best’ in genre since Black Hawk Down | World | News
A war film streaming now is hailed by fans as astoundingly real. Mosul (2019) tells the story of Kawa (played by Adam Bessa), a rookie cop in the titular Iraqi city who joins up with a rogue SWAT team as they seek to liberate it from ISIS insurgents.
The film, which was written and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan is based on real events, namely the 2016 Battle of Mosul. The movie was generally well received, with one Audience Reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes calling it the “best movie about urban warfare, post Black Hawk Down”.
The 2001 Ridley Scott film is often held up as among the most intense and immersive war films ever.
Another said it’s a movie “so engaging that it’s hard to believe there’s a film crew there with lights & cameras”, adding: “Astoundingly real.”
A third said: “Exciting and emotionally draining story from a different perspective than usual, well worth a watch.
“Great editing and cinematography too. Personally thought it was as good as The Hurt Locker, with a more realistic portrayal of Iraqi forces and just as intense battle scenes.
A fourth added: “A refreshing perspective… American made but in Arabic. Excellent production values and completely engrossing.
“Story, dialog, actors, emotion, cinematography, combat/military technical accuracy.. Everything was on point.”
Another fan said on IMDb that the action in the film is “non-stop and is punctuated with solid story telling”.
“It is a hidden gem on Netflix and would be loved by all action / thriller / war movie buffs out there,” they added.
The movie is has an 83% score on the site’s Tomatometer, which reflects the percentage of approved critics who have given it a positive review.
It also has an 82% score on the site’s Popcornmeter, reflecting a positive reception from general viewers.
