August 2025 four-wheeler sales analysis: Hyundai reclaims lost ground – Car News
Four-wheeler sales in August 2025 have seen Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Hyundai have seen a decline in sales, while Toyota has seen growth.
Over the last two days, we’ve seen how the auto industry did in terms of sales. Maruti Suzuki sits at the helm of the industry, leading the charge with sales, while the battle for second has been interesting, with Mahindra and Hyundai battling it out. However, August 2025 saw a different outcome.
The battle for the remaining three positions was also tough, with three manufacturers sitting with marginal differences. So here’s a look at the sales analysis between the top five manufacturers in August 2025.
August 2025 sales analysis
Leading sales in August 2025 is Maruti Suzuki, having sold 1,31,278 units in the domestic market. For reference, Maruti Suzuki’s August 2024 sales in the domestic market stood at 1,43,075 units. Maruti Suzuki is the only manufacturer that gives a detailed segment-wise breakup of data, and going by them, the compact segment – consisting of the Baleno, Swift, Wagon R, Celerio, and Dzire – was the only segment that saw growth, albeit marginal.
The compact segment saw sales of 59,597 units in August 2025, as opposed to 58,051 units sold in August 2024. The mid-size segment, consisting of the Ciaz, saw zero sales, while the utility vehicle segment, despite being the trend in the industry, saw sales of 54,043 units compared to 62,684 units sold in August 2024.
The battle for second
The battle for second has been intense between Mahindra and Hyundai, with the former being consistent over the last few months. However, August sales saw Hyundai reclaim its position as India’s second best-seller, having sold 44,001 units, with a majority of its chunk being the Creta.
In a surprise move, Tata Motors claims third, although its passenger vehicle segment saw a 7 percent decline in domestic sales. Tata Motors has seen success with the Punch, which is available as an ICE, all-electric, and as a CNG version.
Mahindra settles for fourth, having witnessed a 9 percent decline in sales. The SUV maker’s sales stood at 39,399 units in August 2025, and for the brand, the Scorpio has been the best-seller for a while now, which consists of two models: Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N. Mahindra has had success with the XUV700 as well, and with its new EV range, the BE 6 and XEV 9e.
Toyota takes the fifth spot, with sales at 34,236 units, and a YoY growth of 11 percent. In comparison, Toyota sold 30,879 units in August 2024. Toyota’s partnership with Maruti Suzuki has seen results, and the carmaker is betting big on its hybrid vehicles, while also gearing up for a new EV launch, which will be based on the eVitara. That said, the upcoming festive season will be a busy month for the carmakers, with the industry set to see growth.
