Aurora’s Movies in the Park goes retro with Throwback Thursday screenings

Cheaper by the Dozen 2, the original Jumanji, and Toy Story will play on Thursdays in August in Town Park

Aurora is getting in on the Throwback Thursday action in the coming month with a retro spin on its popular Movies in the Park summer series.

The town will present three movies at Town Park in August and each has been chosen to spark some nostalgia and help create new memories that span the generations.

The fun gets underway on Aug. 14 at 8.45 p.m. with the Steve Martin-Bonnie Hunt comedy Cheaper by the Dozen 2. A sequel to the popular 2003 comedy, partially filmed in Aurora, this instalment follows the family of 14 on vacation where they face off against a family of 10.

The series continues on Aug. 21 at 8.30 p.m. with the original Jumanji starring the iconic Robin Williams.

Wrapping up the series on Aug. 28 at 8.15 p.m. is Pixar’s original Toy Story.

This year marks Cheaper by the Dozen’s 20th anniversary, while Jumanji and Toy Story both mark 30 years of entertaining families in 2025.

“This year we went with a Throwback Thursday theme since the movies are on three Thursdays back to back,” says Shelley Ware, special events co-ordinator for the Town of Aurora, noting they aimed to curate a trio of films that weren’t so readily available on streaming services. “When you look at the 30th anniversaries or the 20th anniversaries, not only do they bring up a nostalgic feeling when you watch them again up on the big screen, hopefully [those who saw them on the big screens the first time] will have their children get to experience that with them, almost like sharing a memory down a generation.”

Prior to each screening, there will be an array of family-friendly activities on offer, each themed to that evening’s movie – including camp games tied in to Cheaper by the Dozen 2, and adventure game-based activations for Jumanji, which takes place within a board game.

Adding ambiance to all this is the leafy surrounds of Aurora Town Park, which Ware says imparts a little bit extra to the film-going experience.

Also returning this year will be activations from the Central York Fire Services.

“The safety prevention team is coming to each of the movie nights, so they’ll be bringing out really cool activations and providing education to the families that attend about fire safety in the home and elsewhere,” says Ware, noting they held a successful activation last year and organizers are happy to have them back.

They will be offering hands-on activities for kids and information for parents and guardians.

But, at the end of the day, it’s all about the community coming together.

“Weather really plays a big factor,” she says. “I remember what must have been 10 years ago now when we featured E.T. – we didn’t plan it this way, but there was a full moon that night. Based on how clear the skies are, that can really impact the experience. Last summer, you could see glimpses of the Borealis on the second or third movie and that was wild, too. Then there have been nights where there is cloud cover, and that just makes it a little bit darker and we get to start the movie sooner. The sky-views are always different and that just adds to the whole experience.

“The experience is more than what [first-timers] expect. There is a wildness and a feeling of freedom to be able to watch a movie out in the open air and not be confined in a seat in a theatre. It’s just the freedom of going wherever, laying our blanket or your chair wherever, the casual atmosphere, and being able to watch a movie on the big screen with surround sound.”

Aurora’s Movies in the Park is free to attend, but donations to the Aurora Food Pantry are encouraged. For more information on the series, visit aurora.ca/moviesinthepark.
