Australian universities get UGC nod to establish campuses in India

New Delhi: Three leading Australian universities have received the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish campuses in India, marking a significant development coinciding with the fifth anniversary of India’s National Education Policy (NEP), officials announced on Tuesday.

The universities approved to set up their Indian branches are Western Sydney University (WSU), Victoria University, and La Trobe University.

Western Sydney University, a prominent public research institution founded in 1989, plans to open a campus in Greater Noida. The university, which operates 13 campuses and serves over 49,000 students in Sydney, is known for its focus on sustainability and social impact. Its Indian campus will offer undergraduate programmes such as BA in Business Analytics and BA in Business Marketing, along with postgraduate programmes including MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Victoria University, established in 1916, is one of the few dual-sector institutions in Australia offering both higher education and vocational (TAFE) training. With a strong international presence in countries like China, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, the university is noted for its applied research in sports science, business, and IT. The Noida campus will offer undergraduate courses in Business, Data Science, and Cyber Security, as well as postgraduate degrees like MBA and Master’s in IT.

La Trobe University, which originated in 1964, is internationally recognised for its applied research in fields such as smart cities, molecular sciences, and biotechnology. The university will set up a campus in Bengaluru, offering undergraduate programmes in Business (Finance, Marketing, and Management), Computer Science (AI and Software Engineering), and Public Health.

The move follows the 2023 announcement by the UGC outlining guidelines for establishing and operating foreign higher educational institutions in India. The initiative is part of a broader push under the NEP to internationalise India’s higher education system and provide students with global academic opportunities at home.
