Ava’s Angle: Ice Bus honored in first round of Hockey East seasonal awards before playoffs 

As the regular season has come to an end and playoffs are upon college hockey, the UConn men’s hockey team was mentioned across multiple of the Hockey East season awards in their first round of announcements. The Hockey East Association announced on Wednesday the 2024-25 Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team and six other season-long awards as voted by 11 head coaches around the men’s league. The awards come as a part of the celebration of the 40th annual Hockey East Tournament, which started with the first round on Wednesday.

For the Huskies, Hudson Shandor was honored with two sportsmanship awards by the league. The graduate student captain will be presented with the Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award, given by Hockey East league to one player who has demonstrated consistent superior conduct and sportsmanship on and off the ice.  

Another honor that was awarded to Schandor was the Gladiator Custom Mouthguards Best Defensive Forward. The other award for Hockey East’s Best Defensive Defenseman went to Boston College’s Eamon Powell. Both players have demonstrated exquisite defensive abilities through this college hockey season. Schandor was also runner up for Hockey East Scoring Champion to Boston College’s Ryan Leonard.  

On another note, the Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team was announced by the Hockey East league in addition to the special awards. Freshman goaltender Callum Tung was mentioned as a part of the All-Rookie team along with defenseman and forwards from Boston University, Boston College, Vermont and Massachusetts 

There are more awards to come from the Hockey East league following this first announcement. The league will release the 2024-25 All-Star Teams on Friday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. The finalists for Player, Rookie and Coach of the Year awards will be announced on Monday, March 17 following the quarterfinal rounds of the league tournament. 

As for the 2025 Hockey East Men’s tournament, it began on Wednesday with the opening round games between Vermont and Massachusetts, Northeastern and Merrimack, UMass Lowell and New Hampshire. The winners of those matchups advanced to this Friday which is where the Huskies come into play since they earned the bye-game as the four seed. Boston University, Maine, and Boston College face the winners of the first round while UConn has been locked to play Providence who is in the five seed.

Following Saturday’s quarterfinal games, the semifinal rounds are set for 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 at TD Garden in Boston. The 40th Hockey East Tournament championship will be played on Friday, March 21 at 7:30 pm also at the Garden. All three of the games will be available to stream live on NESN+. 

UConn will host the first of the Quarter Final games for the Hockey East playoffs on Friday, March 14. The Huskies as the No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed Providence at Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs. The Ice Bus closed out the regular season with a win over Vermont which extended their unbeaten streak to 7 games and notched their overall season record at 20 wins. With sophomore Joey Muldowney breaking records, sophomore Jake Richard’s hot streak on offense, plus Schandor on defense and the rest of the team’s regular season success, the Huskies will make a huge push to get to TD Garden for the next rounds of the Hockey East Tournament. Puck drop at Toscano Family Ice Forum is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be aired live on NESN+ and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield.
