The Indian public cloud services market, including infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solutions, and software-as-a-service (SaaS), revenue totaled $10.9 billion for 2024, according to the market research firm IDC. The overall Indian public cloud services market is expected to reach $30.4 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 22.6% for 2024-29.
AWS, along with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, is among the major players in this market. Google has two cloud regions, and Microsoft has three in India. On the other hand, AWS India has two regions, and counts companies like Axis Bank, HDFC Life, and Acko are among its customers.Â
AWS has been investing heavily in the Indian market. The most recent one is its $8.2 billion outlet in Maharashtra over the next few years. The Amazon’s cloud division will deploy its own graphics processing units (GPUs), latest technologies, and cloud management services in India as part of this initiative, said Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during the announcement. Additionally, after meeting with state ministers at the World Economic Forum 2025 held in Davos, AWS is reportedly set to invest ₹60,000 crore to build data infrastructure in Telangana.

Earlier in 2023, AWS committed $12.7 billion or over ₹1 lakh crore into the country’s infrastructure by 2030 to meet customer demand. This followed the cloud company’s investment of $3.7 billion (₹30,900 crore) between 2016-2022, bringing its total investment in India to $16.4 billion. As per AWS, this investment in India’s data infrastructure is expected to create 131,700 full-time jobs in domains like engineering and telecommunications.
Notably, AWS was embroiled in an issue with Indian tax authorities, pertaining to retrospective tax, since 2023. Indian tax officials sought to levy taxes on cloud services fees paid by Amazon’s Indian entity to its US counterpart. However, as per a Bar and Bench report in May this year, the Delhi High Court ruled that payments received by AWS from Indian entities for cloud computing services are not taxable as royalty or fees for technical services (FTS). This ruling means that AWS can expect to recoup taxes paid.Â
